International Day of Action for Rivers

Every March 14, the International Day of Action for Rivers is celebrated, with the intention of raising public awareness about the importance of caring for and protecting freshwater sources around the world. The protection of this vital and essential resource for life depends on all of us

¿WHY ARE RIVERS SO IMPORTANT?

The rivers originate from the eyes of water or springs, the rain and the melting of glaciers or snow-capped mountains. The flows irrigate the different ecosystems from the peaks of the snow-capped peaks to reach both the Amazonian plains and the coast. On their way, they flood flora and fauna with life, as well as communities and human settlements around the world

¿WHY IS THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACTION FOR RIVERS CELEBRATED?

This International Day is celebrated to make visible the problems faced by rivers around the planet due to the incidence of pollution caused by different human activities. From small communities that discharge their sewage and solid waste, to small and large-scale oil and mining operations. Chemical contaminants such as mercury, chlorine, ammonia, agrochemicals, pesticides, among others.

We all share responsibility for the protection of a resource as valuable as water. The impact of pollution is causing the irreparable loss of endemic flora and fauna species in ecosystems. It is essential to create awareness about the conservation of water sources, in order to achieve a sustainable use of natural resources and prevent their disappearance.

We take advantage of this date to reinforce our commitment to the conservation of natural resources and we call on society as whole to learn about the threats that affect our rivers.

Let’s take care of our ecosystems, so that we can continue traveling and exploring destinations where we can have close contact with nature.
