The Virgin Of The Panecillo

One of the most outstanding tourist places in Quito and that you should not miss on your tour is the Virgen del Panecillo. It is located on top of the Panecillo hill that emerges in the heart of the capital and offers a spectacular panoramic view of practically the entire city.

El Panecillo houses this monument designed and built by the Spanish sculptor Agustín de la Herrán Matorras, made with 7,400 pieces in an aluminum and magnesium alloy. This is considered the tallest aluminum monument in the world. The Spanish artist created this 30-meter-high work from his studio in Madrid. For its shipment to Ecuador it was disassembled and later assembled with its numbered pieces like a gigantic puzzle, on a concrete base.

The Virgen del Panecillo is a replica of the Virgin of Quito, a 30 cm high wooden sculpture from the colonial era, made in 1734 by the artist Bernardo de Legarda of the Quito School of Art. It is a unique piece, not only for the perfection of its work but also for the detail of its angel wings, a detail that makes it stand out as it is the only winged virgin on the continent. Another element for which it stands out is the globe on which it sits and the snake lying at its feet, components that make it a jewel of Quito sculpture and can be admired on the main altar of the church of San Francisco.

Visit Quito like never before and take advantage of the possibility of getting to know this wonder of Quito on a personalized tour, in which you will not only be able to admire the original Virgin of Legarda, but also reach the top of Panecillo, climb to the crown of the Virgin and enjoy yourself. contemplating Quito in all its splendor.
