Good Friday in Quito: It is not observed… it is lived in the soul

There are experiences that can be told… and others that can only be lived.

This is Good Friday in Quito: a day that goes beyond the religious, beyond the traditional. It’s an experience that touches deep souls and connects you with the history, faith, and living culture of a city that, on that day, beats in a different and unique way.

From early in the morning, Quito’s Historic Center begins to transform. The cobblestone streets, colonial balconies, and ancient churches prepare for one of the most moving events of the year: the procession of Jesús del Gran Poder. There is an atmosphere of solemnity, respect, and something that can only be described as an energy that unites thousands of people in a shared spirit.

The procession with the cucuruchos (small figures) accompanying Jesus of the Great Power. Striking figures dressed in purple robes and with tall cones covering their faces. They walk in silence, many barefoot, some wearing chains or carrying crosses. Each step tells a story: of faith, of promises, of gratitude, of penitence. The image of Jesus of the Great Power, carried on devout shoulders, advances with a symbolic force that stops time. It is impossible not to be moved or moved by what is happening in that moment.

I’ve seen travelers from all over the world be left speechless by this manifestation. Some join the procession, others simply watch with heavy hearts and glassy eyes. Because this moment isn’t just for believers. It’s for any human being who seeks to connect with something authentic, real, and deeply human.
